Ruby Wardrobe Refresh

Spring Clean Your Wardrobe!

chairIt’s National Op Shop week this week (24  – 31st Aug), so schedule in a Spring Clean, refresh your wardrobe and do a good deed!

National Op Shop week is a great initiative, to help boost stocks for Op Shops and the charities behind them, so throw those wardrobe doors open and create some space for the things you actual wear and get rid of the things taking up prime real estate!

Follow our easy guide to performing your own wardrobe clear out and if it’s becoming a mission fit for an expert, call us about our Wardrobe Refresh Packages!

  • Clean and thoroughly dry winter clothes, then pack them into air tight containers and store them away.
  • Mend damaged items or get rid of them.
  • If clothes don’t fit you anymore, give them to charity! We hear lots of people saying…’when I lose weight or when I put weight back on, I’ll need these again’.  Hmmm, that might be the case, but if they don’t fit you now, get them out of your cupboard space!
  • Don’t just throw items out because you haven’t warn them for a while, try them on and see what they look like. You might spark a comeback!
  • Items looking faded and worn – either dye them or donate them.

Be selective –Last year around 60,000 tonnes of items donated were unusable and disposed of in landfill – the cost for this is borne by the charities. That’s why only good quality items should be donated to charity op shops, so:

  • Don’t leave clothes if they are damaged, dirty or worn out.
  • If clothes come in pairs e.g. gloves, attach them together. Tie shoes together with their laces.
  • Make sure you empty all your pockets and donate any treasure you find!
  • Don’t dump things next to charity bins if they are full…take them to the shop or wait till they’ve been emptied.

So get clearing and donating….and if the task it too big, get in touch and we’ll get a stylist to do the hard-work for you!!!

Winter Whites

By Ishtar Schneider

Even though most of Australia doesn’t get to see a white winter, it doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy dressing the part. One of my favourite seasonal looks, is head to toe crisp and clean winter whites.

People love dressing in monochrome, but more often than not, it’s black on black on black (yes, we’re guilty of this too!).  But an easy and chic way to create diversity in your wardrobe is to shake things up by introducing monochrome using a white and off-white palette instead.

Trust us, white is totally the new black!!

The trick to nailing an all white ensemble, without looking like a giant snowman, is making sure you work with lots of layers. Pair rich fabrics (leather, suede, fake fur) with fluttery ones (chiffon, silk, organza) to add interesting texture and dimension.

Ease yourself into a white on white look with sumptuous cashmere sweaters and chunky knits layered over crisp button downs and tailored trousers for a comfy and chic 9-5 outfit:

    House of Fraser

Love this embellished Burberry jumper from MyTeresa. Perfectly polished that still has that wow factor:

Play with different proportions by matching an A-line skirt with a cropped sweater like this cute little Topshop number:

Or pair oversized knits with leather pencil skirts. This House of Fraser Biba skirt with laser cut outs is

A-MAZING:

Add an edge with outerwear that’s super sleek.  Try a crisp white leather jacket, there are some stunning versions out now, with or without sleeves:

Isabel Marant Etoile

These jackets look gorgeous paired with sleek white skinny jeans and topped off with metallic or brightly coloured pointy toed pump to give it some pop…

If you’re worried about your outfit being a little too ‘ice queen’ try a pair of skinnies with some major detailing to help break it up a bit like these Paige and Closed versions:

white jeans joined

You can’t forget to brighten things up all the way down to your footwear!

I absolutely love these Madison Harding white cut out booties that really appeal to my love of all things western. They would be great for weekends paired with boyfriend jeans and a messy updo!

boot combined

These Alias Mae boots (right) are a steal and add some great texture and pattern into a monochrome look.

So switch things up this season by playing around with winter whites in your wardrobe.

Just be sure to avoid the red wine and spaghetti sauce!

These boots were made for walking…. and showing off!

Now that the seasons are changing, and it is officially too cold to be wearing open toe shoes without feeling like a frostbite victim, we wanted to turn your attention to one of our FAVOURITE autumn/winter wardrobe items… BOOTS!

As soon as that cold chill creeps in to the wind, ladies everywhere starting to bring out their opaque tights and we know it’s time to check out some fancy footwear.

Since we love them SO much, we have curated some of the ones we’re absolutely lusting over to help you wade through the sea of shoes that even a pro shopper can get lost in!

We’ll start with a classic: The Ankle Boot:

Super popular, cut in a classic black, likes these from Trenery, $249:

boot1

So, if you’re looking for something that’ll go from day to night in a flash, a black pair with a chunkier low heel is a great item to add to your list. Our tip is to make sure there’s a bit of space between you and the boot, you don’t want it to be gripping your ankle for dear life. The gap will actually make your legs look longer!

A great ankle detail like this bargains from Billini at Birdsnest ($79.95), will help make your black boots feel extra special:

boots2

And, as much as we love a classic black pair, this season it’s all about taking risks with pieces like this animal print pair from The Iconic  ($299) which would look AMAZING paired with some tailored black trousers and a loose metallic sweater or a bright blazer that pops. Can you say fierce?

BOOT3

We also really love a nice camel coloured boot in a sumptuous textile like this suede DV by Dolce Vita pair, $85, with a gorgeous perforated middle detail:

boot4

OR these lust-worthy Rag&Bone Harrow boots, $561, a fav with Reese Witherspoon, Alessandra Ambrosio and Julianne Hough:

If you’re looking for a pair with less of a heel, try these gorgeous Seychelles buckle boots, ($97.99), they’ll keep your feet happy and dry all season long for an affordable price! I have this style is black and they are so comfy and stylish:

bott6

One of my other favourite boot styles, which is always in fashion, is:

The Riding Boot:

These boots look best when they hit right below the knee and pair perfectly with ponte pants (an a/w staple).

I currently have both black (Wanted) and chocolate brown (Ralph Lauren) pairs of riding boots in my wardrobe,  we highly recommend investing in range of colours. You can match them with tights, wool winter skirts, ponte pants and coloured skinnies. The possibilities are endless!

Look for deep caramel shades which mix well with a cooler winter palette like these Vince Camutos (from $99-$198):

boot7

For something a bit different try these Steve Madden boots, (from $169.95) with an exposed red accent zip that is just gorgeous:

boot8

And finally, if you’re looking to add some major drama, you have simply got to try the hottest boot trend:

OTK aka Over-The-Knee.

Designers from Tony Bianco to Alex Perry are loving this design right now!

Definitely a splurge item, $1700, Gianvito Rossi, OTK ones are perfect with a pointy toe and in this suede material. For added flair try these Brian Atwood ‘Ares’ boots which feature quilted leather and gold hardware, ($852), we also adore these trendy (and less exy at $120) oxblood, River Island OTK boots. Such a great statement item. Pair them with a cream blouse, a leather a-line skirt and tights:

So, when you’re out boot shopping, just remember Ruby Slippers Top Tips:

-Look for sumptuous fabrics (ones that will last and just scream luxury)

-Extra detailing that stands out (think quilting, buckles and statement stitching)

-Leather, leather, leather! (if in doubt, go with a sleek, black leather pair – it really is a no brainer)

-A heel you can actually walk a mile in (think stacked and a bit thicker than usual).

Because your boots should be made for walking… and flaunting with all of your friends!

Dressing to a Dress Code!

There is nothing that seems to fill people with panic and fear like a stipulated dress code on an invitation. At Ruby Slippers we hear cries of help from desperate guests trying to figure out what on earth to wear to ensure they look the part.

Two of my very dear friends are getting married in August, their dress code of ‘Countryside Chic‘, seems to have caused more headaches than help.   People seem to know where they sit with Black tie, Cocktail…but Countryside Chic causes all sorts of chaos!

Well fear not fashionistas, we’re here to help! If you’re attending a function or wedding with this dress code, let us set you on the right track:

The good news is when someone puts this onto an invitation, they are inviting you to be a little less formal with your outfit – they want you to have a little fun and look appropriate for the venue.

Let’s start with the boys…. it’s your time to play around with pattern, colours and accessories!!! We mean this in a good way….

Don’t feel you need to wear a full suit, you can mix and match trousers and a jacket:

cc18

Brightly checked shirts are a big yes for the this look. Clash with a patterned tie for a less formal look:

CC13

Braces, hat… a double yes!! Get that country feel going:

cc17

Tie? Not necessarily, an open shirt with a waist coat or jacket looks great or why not try out a bow tie, we love this look:

Combined CC 2

Jacket? A jacket is the easiest way to pull your outfit together and give you that ‘finished’ look. If you’d rather leave yours at home though, try and button through sweater or waist coat:

cc15

Jeans… No, it’s a wedding! Lets make an effort people!

Countryside Chic for the Ladies….well it’s a wedding, so you’ll want to get glam’d up – just with a little more laid back feel. Lets rule a couple of things out first: avoid evening gowns and formal frocks, they will look out of place under this dress code.

Really play with colour and pattern, go bright, colourful and clash prints:

lcc15

 Love, love, love Polka dots:

polka dots

The below looks are very different, but both work. A maxi dress looks elegant, is easily accessorised and can be paired with flats or wedges. If you’re not tall enough to carry off a maxi, try a short style. This turquoise colour is amazing, and the crochet detail gives it a more elegant feel.

Vintage is the perfect look for a Country Wedding. Simple and elegant. Add a floral detail to give the perfect wedding feel:

vintage

My final piece of advice ladies would be around your footwear. Leave the stiletto’s at home…the ‘country’ in the dress code spells danger for big heels. Embrace sexy sandals, wedges or gorgeous wellies!!!

For the Love of Leather

One of the best fabrics to incorporate into any wardrobe (particularly in autumn and winter) is… you guessed it… LEATHER.

Something about the texture, the versatility and the edginess it brings to a look is both classic and modern. It is quickly becoming a favourite medium for high and low street designers alike.

Now, I know some ladies balk at the idea of leather.

Mostly, I think it’s because they’re thinking they will look like a “cat woman meets dominatrix” but fear not because I’ve pulled together some pieces, that will have people staring, but for all the RIGHT reasons (no whips needed).

Ease into this trend by grabbing some items which simply incorporate leather accents, like this cobalt Dion Lee blazer with leather panels.

dion lee jacket

Or this Generation Love sweater with leather/pleather sleeves. I love the two tone look!

jumper

For a twist on your classic black leather, try a structured dress but in a great colour. Keep it simple and not overdone by looking for items like this stunning turquoise TopShop number:

top shop

or this divine cranberry hued Malene Birger number:

birger dress

For my daring  fashionistas, to take your leather to the next level, try a leather piece with laser cut outs, like these fabulous skirts from Burberry  ($)

burberry skirt

and Witchery (bargain):

witchery skirt

I love how style goddess Nicole Richie has kept her look simple and monochrome pairing her laser cut leather skirt with pointy heels and a black sweater. The addition of her punchy yellow clutch keeps things fresh but still classy:

nic

But, you can never go wrong with a cropped leather jacket! This is an investment piece so make sure you LOVE it. It took 18 months of scouring to find my cropped black Joie leather jacket, but, I’ve had it now for 6 years and it’s one of those staple items that is perfect for adding a bit of edge to your regular jeans and tee look. Loving this Kookai Jacket:

kookai

I also really love a camel coloured leather like this Maje jacket:

 maja

So go on, be daring with your look and add some leather to your wardrobe this winter! It can add a whole lot of drama to your everyday (in the best way possible).

Winter Warmers; Autumn Fashion at it’s finest!!!

One of the best things about the days getting shorter and the temperature falling is being able to purchase all those lovely winter warmers (jumpers, boots and scarves oh my!). But the top of the winter fashion pyramid is definitely….. the winter coat!

Something I have learned to appreciate is a great winter coat. One in a stand-out colour, with a great embellishment or with a fantastic texture (wool is your best friend) can end up stealing the show from even the most fabulous of party outfits.

I always gravitate to basic styles with an eye catching feature like this  grey number with a waterfall neckline:

asos winter coat grey

ASOS

Pastels are everywhere on the runway, pink in particular, with shades ranging from pale pearl to muted fuchsia, all equally delicious. Long lengths are great as long as you stick to a nicely tailored style:

JAEGER Coatoasis coat

Jaeger                                                                                                                                                                                                                          Oasis and Other Brands

Now, for all the daring ladies out there, I am absolutely in LOVE with this River Island Camel Coat with colour blocked sleeves and dramatic fur collar and this wild leopard car coat. So out of the box and amazing.

RIVER Island coat

 River Island at ASOS

If you’re into the classics, try a twist on a regular trench by grabbing one in a bold hue, like this cranberry coloured one from ASOS:

Asos

or Karen Walkers sweet heart print design available at Myer:

Karen Walker

Collarless styles are still very much in, try one in a structured fabric which will hold up against the elements. I have a wool one similar to this that I wore 24/7 in NYC this winter. Best purchase ever.

Cooper St at The Iconic

For some drama, try a coat with a dramatic neck like these two little numbers:

shopbopliannacape jacket

Shopbop                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Nordstrom

So go on, embrace winter (coats!), because who cares what you’re wearing underneath when you look this good?
