Stop…..it’s Jelly Time!!!

Now, I think the time has come to address a trend that people either love or hate. One that’s worn by celebs across the globe and has become increasingly popular over the last few years.

It’s the trend that you thought you would never see again, at least not after you graduated primary school.  Yes, I’m talking about jelly shoes!

These particularly flexible plastic shoes, that most girls will remember as being a NIGHTMARE to deal with when they were 5 years old. Why? Mostly because although they look pretty, if you got a pebble stuck in one of those bad boys, you were done for. Pain city.

So, obviously I was skeptical when I started noticing a resurgence of jelly shoes cropping up in stores not only in the US, but in Sydney too.

However, I caved when I saw a reasonably priced pair, in a wonderful array of colours at Country Road,  (on sale at $29.96, get them quick).  The T-bar sandals with a toe strap in neon pink ones (besides perfectly matching my nail polish at the time) were calling my name.

croad

I definitely didn’t regret it.  This wasn’t your grandma’s jelly shoe, no sir! These had been streamlined and were surprisingly comfortable for being made of a hard plastic.

Now jelly has proved itself to be extremely versatile and celebs are loving them! Designers like Tory Burch, I purchased this great pair of lilac Revas in Jelly, have jumped on the jelly train and they are flying off the shelves.

reva

The design is smarter, my Revas have air holes for ventilation (no sweaty feet here!) and I’m positive even the biggest Negative Nelly can find a pair of jellys to fit their style.

And it’s not limited to sandals. Oh, no!

If you’re especially daring, Vivienne Westwood has an iconic line of jelly heels, featuring a sweet heart or lip detail on the front of her jelly open toe pumps. They come in a wide range of colour combos and fashionistas like Rihanna and Katy Perry have both been snapped in them.

So the next time you’re thinking about upping your style game, think about adding a pair of jelly’s to your wardrobe.

Try the sandal version on your next trip to the beach, while out for brunch, or add a wedge pair for a wander around Sculptures by the Sea. If you go for a brightly coloured pair keep the rest of your outfit neutral and let you feet do the talking.

As the great Marilyn Monroe once said, “Give a girl a great pair of shoes and she can conquer the world”.

Packing Like a Pro for a Weekend Away!

Packing is an art, which can be difficult to master!

packing

We all pack too much when going on holiday, who doesn’t?  The last minute panic where we throw in three extra pairs of shoes “just in case” is all too familiar.  With an increasing number of airlines charging fees for overweight and oversized luggage we would much rather be spending the money on the latest Michael Kors purse or several pina coladas.

So, whether you are venturing on a city break to Melbourne or a beach retreat in Byron here are our tips for packing like a pro.

1. Before you start to pack everything into your suitcase place all the items on your bed, this will help you visualise every outfit and it will also help you realise what you are missing.

2. For a weekend away you should be aiming for four or five outfits.   Concentrate on picking versatile pieces which you can mix and match accordingly.

3. Don’t bring too many pairs of shoes as they are normally heavy, take up lots of space and no matter how hard you try to convince yourself you WON’T wear them all!

4. Accessorise well – Statement jewellery will transform an outfit in the blink of an eye.  Jazz up basic tees or sweatshirts with statement necklaces and you will be super stylish at the same time.

5. Scarves and Pashminas are a MUST.  Wear them as a scarf, sarong, wrap, or use them as a blanket on the plane or to lie on in the park.   We are loving the Turkish style towels which are in all the shops at the moment (see below).

6. Blazers – Granted you are not going to need a blazer while catching rays midsummer on Palm Beach, but they are great for city breaks and will add an element of class when wearing your favourite pair of jeans…think Jennifer Aniston striding through LA airport!

7. Maxi dresses – Another piece which can look great over a bikini and will look equally amazing when out for evening drinks.  Just ditch the bikini and flip flops, add a clutch and a statement necklace or arm cuff and you are ready to hit the tiles.

It’s all in your Jeans, Part 3…Handle with Care!!

If you are buying your jeans raw then avoid washing them for as long as possible to allow the fabric to develop its wear and character. Think of them like a good wine that you cellar and allow to age!

To avoid leaving a blue trail in your path, wear your jeans for a period of time before going near light coloured tops, trainers or sofas! There will always be loose dye initially on the surface of the fabric, but after a few weeks this will disappear. The other option is to give them a quick cold rinse to remove the surface dye, but it is a shame to do this so early on.

Wear them until you notice that dye is no longer coming off on your hands when you touch them then you’re good to go with light colours!

There are various techniques to avoid washing such as dry cleaning, airing them regularly or even storing them in the freezer to kill the bacteria!

If you can hold out (6 months is a good period of time), then wash them at a cool temperature, as raw denim is more prone to shrinkage than pre washed denim. You will be amazed at the results.

 cold wash

You will notice that the denim has faded more in areas that are in contact with other surfaces. Boys, you will notice marks where you keep your wallet, keys or phone and creasing around the thighs and the back of the knees.

After this first wash its time to buy a new pair and start the process again. It is always good to have a dark and a washed denim in your wardrobe at any one time.

See your jeans as an investment, they will more than likely be your most regularly worn item of clothing. Spend as much as you can to get the best quality you can. It’s worth it!

Fascinating!

No Race Day outfit is complete without a head piece!

From simple, soft and pretty corsages to statement hats, there is something out there for everyone.

The high street is becoming increasingly successful at producing fabulous pieces without a scary price tag. Mimco has recently launched a fantastic Spring Races Collection named ‘The Roar and the Beautiful’ which is definitely worth checking out:

If you are after something extra special there are an array of Australian millinery designers who are currently on top of their game, designing exquisite pieces for the global market, such as, Sydney based designer Suzy O’Rourke:

hatsuzy

When buying a hat or head piece make sure it fits correctly, it needs to stay in place all day.  If possible, ask your hairdresser to fit your hat while having your hair styled or ask a friend to secure it in with hair grips.

Don’t be afraid to experiment with style and colour.  Your head piece does not have to match your dress perfectly, but try and co ordinate it with your shoes or clutch.

Our Top Picks for Looking Hot at the Melbourne Cup!

It’s that time of the year again, the most stylish event in the sporting calendar is nearly upon us.  Ladies (and Gents) across the country are currently facing the dilemma of choosing what to wear….do not panic, we’re here to help!

When choosing a dress, elegance is key.  Don’t feel you have to be daring with the dress, the monochrome colour palette may be considered by some as “playing it safe” but it is also super chic and elegant.  Panelled dresses provide a more flattering line, or you can add texture by opting for lace details

If you go for a bold print or a statement dress, compliment the look with minimal accessories (such as nude pumps and clutch) and in contrast accessorize simple dresses with show stopping head pieces or embellished clutches.  The perfect accessories can be as effective as the dress when chosen correctly.

Here are five of our favourite dresses for Spring Racing:

It’s all in your Jeans…Part 2!

So, now you know which denim to go for, let us guide you through the different washes and styles.

Raw or washed?

Always try to buy raw (dry) denim. This is dark denim in its loom state as opposed to washed and treated. Raw denim may feel stiff and uncomfortable at first.  Over time it will soften with wear and fade according to your body shape and what you put your jeans through. This will create its unique and personal characteristics.

Dark denim is also great if you want to dress them up with a shirt or blazer etc. Of course they will also look great with a tee shirt and running shoes.

What fit should I go for?

The trend over recent years is towards a skinny leg but this is not right for everyone. Know your body shape and be aware of your age and what is suitable for you.

Shorter  and/or thick thighs, avoid cuffs (turn ups) as these will make your legs appear shorter.  Look for a straight or tapered fits.

Slim and/or longer legs, go for a skinny or straight leg and avoid anything too baggy.

Straight leg is generally the best bet for all. Buy them tighter than feels comfortable, as they will stretch out generally by half a size when worn.

What styling do I go for?

Keep it simple and follow classic traditional styling. This will never date and will show off the main characteristics of the fabric. They will be more versatile as they can be worn in casual or smarter combinations.

Next week…how to care for your new purchase!

It’s all in your Jeans!

One of the most common questions asked of  Ruby Slippers Stylists is what makes the perfect pair of jeans, and as an estimated 2.3 billion pairs of jeans are sold every year, we thought we’d give you the knowledge!

In the first of our three part series, our Male Stylist and fashion designer, Jim Thompson, looks at the origins of denim and gives you tips on how to select the best quality.

Brief history of denim

Denim gets its name from the French family who developed it and the city it originated from – Serge de Nimes. The term was shortened over time to Denim, giving birth to one of fashion’s most enduring icons. To create denim, Indigo dyed and white yarns are woven together to create a rugged fabric. The dye is fairly unstable and therefore fades quite easily over time, giving jeans their unique appearance. Originally a form of work wear, metal buttons and rivets were added to prevent ripping at stress points, giving modern day jeans their traditional look.

What denim should I look for?

Selvedge denim is best. Created using a traditional shuttle-weaving loom that is a narrow in width, the selvedge is the edge of each side of the fabric (self edge). It usually has the appearance of white or red finishing at the side seam of the jean. These fabrics are generally better quality and stronger, but, tend to be expensive as modern looms can create fabric at more economical widths. Japan is probably the best source for selvedge denim, as they took up the mantle, buying US shuttle looms post WW2 as the US modernised production.

In part two Jim will be reviewing what sort of jeans to go for and what are the best fits, before looking at which style will work for you and how to care for your jeans. Stay tuned
