Our Top Picks for Looking Hot at the Melbourne Cup!

It’s that time of the year again, the most stylish event in the sporting calendar is nearly upon us.  Ladies (and Gents) across the country are currently facing the dilemma of choosing what to wear….do not panic, we’re here to help!

When choosing a dress, elegance is key.  Don’t feel you have to be daring with the dress, the monochrome colour palette may be considered by some as “playing it safe” but it is also super chic and elegant.  Panelled dresses provide a more flattering line, or you can add texture by opting for lace details

If you go for a bold print or a statement dress, compliment the look with minimal accessories (such as nude pumps and clutch) and in contrast accessorize simple dresses with show stopping head pieces or embellished clutches.  The perfect accessories can be as effective as the dress when chosen correctly.

Here are five of our favourite dresses for Spring Racing:

It’s all in your Jeans…Part 2!

So, now you know which denim to go for, let us guide you through the different washes and styles.

Raw or washed?

Always try to buy raw (dry) denim. This is dark denim in its loom state as opposed to washed and treated. Raw denim may feel stiff and uncomfortable at first.  Over time it will soften with wear and fade according to your body shape and what you put your jeans through. This will create its unique and personal characteristics.

Dark denim is also great if you want to dress them up with a shirt or blazer etc. Of course they will also look great with a tee shirt and running shoes.

What fit should I go for?

The trend over recent years is towards a skinny leg but this is not right for everyone. Know your body shape and be aware of your age and what is suitable for you.

Shorter  and/or thick thighs, avoid cuffs (turn ups) as these will make your legs appear shorter.  Look for a straight or tapered fits.

Slim and/or longer legs, go for a skinny or straight leg and avoid anything too baggy.

Straight leg is generally the best bet for all. Buy them tighter than feels comfortable, as they will stretch out generally by half a size when worn.

What styling do I go for?

Keep it simple and follow classic traditional styling. This will never date and will show off the main characteristics of the fabric. They will be more versatile as they can be worn in casual or smarter combinations.

Next week…how to care for your new purchase!

It’s all in your Jeans!

One of the most common questions asked of  Ruby Slippers Stylists is what makes the perfect pair of jeans, and as an estimated 2.3 billion pairs of jeans are sold every year, we thought we’d give you the knowledge!

In the first of our three part series, our Male Stylist and fashion designer, Jim Thompson, looks at the origins of denim and gives you tips on how to select the best quality.

Brief history of denim

Denim gets its name from the French family who developed it and the city it originated from – Serge de Nimes. The term was shortened over time to Denim, giving birth to one of fashion’s most enduring icons. To create denim, Indigo dyed and white yarns are woven together to create a rugged fabric. The dye is fairly unstable and therefore fades quite easily over time, giving jeans their unique appearance. Originally a form of work wear, metal buttons and rivets were added to prevent ripping at stress points, giving modern day jeans their traditional look.

What denim should I look for?

Selvedge denim is best. Created using a traditional shuttle-weaving loom that is a narrow in width, the selvedge is the edge of each side of the fabric (self edge). It usually has the appearance of white or red finishing at the side seam of the jean. These fabrics are generally better quality and stronger, but, tend to be expensive as modern looms can create fabric at more economical widths. Japan is probably the best source for selvedge denim, as they took up the mantle, buying US shuttle looms post WW2 as the US modernised production.

In part two Jim will be reviewing what sort of jeans to go for and what are the best fits, before looking at which style will work for you and how to care for your jeans. Stay tuned

How to be Loud on Loud Shirt Day!

Three things we love at Ruby Slippers…playing dress up, doing a good deed and being loud! So when we heard about Loud Shirt day, we were sold!

Friday 18th October, is Loud Shirt day…get the memo out to your fundraising crew, this is a great one for the school, office or just an excuse to wear that awesome shirt you’ve been a little frightened of! The Shepherd Center organise this annual event to raise much needed funds for Deaf Children, so it’s a wonderful cause to support.

This year’s event is perfectly timed with this season’s trend of ‘prints’. Along with stores holding the usual florals, spots and stripes… prints are covering, well, pretty much everything! Fruit, cars, animals… you name it! The print is officially in and a welcomed addition to everybody’s wardrobe.

burberry shirt

If you haven’t yet purchased this seasons latest addition, then let Loud Shirt Day kick off a new look in your wardrobe. Follow our simple tips below, nail the look, and most importantly raise some money for charity!

–          Don’t lose sight of the importance of the main colour of the shirt, just because you’re wearing a print doesn’t mean the predominant colour shouldn’t complement your skin tone and hair colour.

Girls:

–          If you’re on the petite side, keep the print small so it’s doesn’t over power you.

–          Don’t be afraid to accessorise, just because you’re wearing print doesn’t mean a necklace can’t work with it too.

–          Team them up with neutral colours.

Guys:

–          This is the perfect in-between shirt. Dressed down from your work shirt, dressed up from a casual tee.

–           Wear with neutral shorts, slacks or jeans.

–          For a more summery look, get a short sleeved version and roll up the sleeves once.

We can’t wait to see how you look people, so take a pic and share it! #loudshirtday

Looking for something to do this Saturday….look no further!

A party… with clothes/jewellery on offer… music… food….in the sunshine….sounding like a perfect day? Well it’s this Saturday, William Street in Paddington. The roads are closed and the vibe is cool!

Starting at 10am through to, well when the party is over. They’re stopping traffic and having an old fashioned street party!

There is some great deals to be had in the stores and we love shopping in gorgeous Paddington…so go and support this shopping area and make sure I doesn’t fade away.

And the Emmy goes to….

We salute Sofia Vergara for being someone who knows her body shape and rocks it. Pictured here at the Emmy’s wearing a beautiful Vera Wang dress, and looking absolutely HOT in it!

Her outfit ticks all the boxes a dress should for an hourglass figure…

Deep V neckline – check

Nipped in waist – check

Straps to balance out her chest – check

Fitted across her hips and thighs, with volume at the bottom – check.

The colour is amazing on her and the ring and earrings, keep it interesting. We love!

A couple of outfits that didn’t get a seal of approval were the see through skirts worn by Julianne Hough and Lena Headey:

see through skirts

Far from being sexy, we think these just show off what can only be described as Bridget Jones knickers! Not a look we’re going for.

Anna Faris was a great example of a lovely dress in an amazing colour….on the wrong person.   The shape is great for her, but the bright yellow colour against her fair skin and blonde hair wash her out – as a result she is lost in the dress and it really doesn’t do her justice.

Anna Faris

This would have looked a million times better on someone with a warm skin tone such as Eva Mendes or Halle Berry.

Key learning for us all; get the fit, colour and style right for you!

Your Charity Shop Needs You!!!

It’s National Op Shop week this week (25 Aug – 1 Sept), so schedule in a Spring Clean, refresh your wardrobe and do a good deed!

National Op Shop week is a great initiative organised by the Charity Do Something, to help boost stocks for Op Shops and the charities behind them.

Follow our easy guide to performing your own wardrobe clear out and if it’s becoming a mission fit for an expert, call us about our Wardrobe Refresh Packages!

  • Clean and thoroughly dry winter clothes, then pack them into air tight containers and store them away.
  • Mend damaged items or get rid of them.
  • If clothes don’t fit you anymore, give them to charity! We hear lots of people saying…’when I lose weight or when I put weight back on, I’ll need these again’.  Hmmm, that might be the case, but if they don’t fit you now, get them out of your cupboard space!
  • Don’t just throw items out because you haven’t warn them for a while, try them on and see what they look like. You might spark a comeback!
  • Items looking faded and worn – either dye them or donate them.

Be selective – In 2012, 60,000 tonnes of items donated were unusable and disposed of in landfill – the cost for this is borne by the charities. That’s why only good quality items should be donated to charity op shops, so:

  • Don’t leave clothes if they are damaged, dirty or worn out.
  • If clothes come in pairs e.g. gloves, attach them together. Tie shoes together with their laces.
  • Make sure you empty all your pockets and donate any treasure you find!

So get clearing and donating!!!

We have lots of monochrome, pastels, bold colours and florals to look forward to.  Goodbye Winter, hello Spring!!!

I am totally in love with this Aurelio Costarella dress. Love, love, love!
