The Monster that is Macy’s NYC!

Question….what do you get if you cross a million square feet of retail space, two coffee shops, a bar, a pizza restaurant and a Ben & Jerry’s…apparently, the World’s largest department store, the hallowed ground that is Macy’s.

I recently found myself shopping in their enormous original flagship store in New York – it really is a marathon just getting round, but lived up to the hype. If you get a chance then definitely schedule a trip, even if it’s just to soak up the experience.  Top tip – head to the Visitors Centre for an International Shopper discount card (11% off everything) to make things even cheaper.

There really is something for every shape, budget, age… they even have a husband day care on the ground floor!  The downside is the lack of changing rooms – it’s always busy, even mid-week, so get there early, take food and water… and if you start hallucinating put the shopping down and put your feet up!!

If New York isn’t on the holiday list this year fear not, the American icon/ tourist destination that is Macy’s has now opened its doors much wider as it ships to Australia.

Just as the store makes it super easy to spend money, the web site works the same. They show prices in Australian dollars, have really reasonable shipping prices and each item has an option to leave feedback, so you can see what other people thought of it, we love this feature. Aussie retailers take note!

Enjoy shopping fans 🙂

Looking for something a little different online?

For those of us who love a bargain and those who are looking for something a little less high street…then we have some gems for you…

Ruby Rags Wardrobe is a community marketplace based out of Bondi, where you can buy and sell clothes.  Simply upload the image, price and details and wait for someone to snap up your wears!  There are no fees for the seller either, bonus! The stock is really good, but a little limited – come on people get selling!!

The Salvation Army have set up an online store, which the company report has seen their sales grow by 18% – bravo!!  So, if you love the clothes, but hate the smell of charity shops this is the place for you!

Asos have also got in on the vintage vibe and launched ASOS Market Place, selling vintage clothing for guys and girls.  You have to go through a screening process before qualifying to become a seller. This is not for those of you who have just completed a wardrobe clear out, and want to get rid of a pile of clothes that need helping to the charity bin or listing on eBay! This is for serious sellers!  There is plenty of stock, the target audience looks to be teens/twenties – or maybe I am just getting old!?

Pretty Dress is a lovely website selling ladies vintage, rockabilly, indie and retro clothing…WARNING, I have just bought 2 dresses whilst writing this so proceed with credit card caution! Great styles for curvy girls!

Try before you buy….

There aren’t too many things that annoy us about shopping, but when we buy lovely goodies online, rip open the packaging only to find that our shiny new purchases don’t look quite the same as they did on the models, there are cries of boo hiss!

Wouldn’t it be perfect to be able to check what something looks like in a mirror before you click on the shopping cart? Well, problem solved! Check out Boutique Jewellery, those clever, clever people not only stock a beautiful range of Australian designed jewellery and offer free nationwide shipping, BUT they also have a virtual mirror! Select a necklace or pair of earrings you love and see how hot you look before buying. Genius! We love it!

Give your wardrobe a Spring Clean!

Is your wardrobe is starting to resemble the racks in Vinnie’s?  Are you wearing the same outfits day in, day out even though the closet is full to burst…. then it’s time for a clear out!

Spring is finally here and it’s a great excuse to give your wardrobe a refresh and brighten up your look.  So, plan some ‘you’ time and follow Ruby Slipper’s simple guide for rejuvenating your wardrobe:

  • Pack up winter clothes into air tight containers and store them away.
  • Mend damaged items or get rid of them.
  • If clothes don’t fit you anymore, give them to charity. We hear lots of people saying…’when I lose weight or when I put weight back on, I’ll need these again’.  Mmm, that might be the case, but if they don’t fit you now, then get them out of your cupboard space!
  • Don’t just throw items out because you haven’t warn them for a while, try them on and see what they look like. You might spark a comeback!
  • Items looking faded and worn – either dye them or throw them.

If the clear out job is too big or you don’t know what looks good and what doesn’t, drop us a line and we can organise a ‘wardrobe refresh’ session.

Step into Spring, with style!

The way we shop has changed. Online shopping is growing at a rate that makes Usain Bolt look somewhat slow!

Some very clever people at NAB projected that in Australia, we will spend a whopping $11.1 billion on online shopping in 2012.

There are so many online stores wanting to help you part with your money, just buying shoes can send your head into a spin! At Ruby Slipper’s we want to make life simple so follow our guide to our favourite online shoe shops and get yourself some fancy footwear for Spring.

Happy shopping and remember the golden rules….

Check the price of returns.

Check the delivery costs, some sites only do free delivery when you spend over a certain amount.

Measure the heel height before you order.

Don’t keep them if they don’t fit!!!

Pimp my handbag….

Do you remember that part in the Sex in the City Movie, where Jennifer Hudson’s character Louise, tells Carrie that her Louis Vuitton handbag is hired?  If you do, and remember thinking what an awesome idea it was, then we’ve found something for you!

Something borrowed’ is an Australian company hiring out designer handbags. They carry a range of different designers, shapes and sizes, so something for all needs and tastes. All are guaranteed to be genuine, no fakes here!   We love the idea of hiring a designer clutch when you need something special for a swanky do, the totes and day bags are brilliant if you want to impress or just want to treat yourself to some hot arm candy!

You can hire for 2 weeks or longer if required. Prices start at $20 for a fortnight hire, but vary depending on the size and make of the bag.  This lush Alexander McQueen is $120 for a fortnight, it would set you back over $2000 to buy new.

I borrowed a bag for a couple of weeks (purely for research purposes!), the process is really simple, the bag arrived quickly all nicely packaged and I got to carry a lovely Marc Jacob’s bag around for 2 weeks.   The downside is definitely having to give it back!

Something borrowed are offering all Ruby Slippers clients 20% off bag hire. Simply put ‘rubyslippers20’ as the discount code when you check out (offer for Australian residents only).

Enjoy!

Dare to bare….

If Fifty Shades of Grey has added a little sparkle to your sex life, but your lingerie isn’t quite cutting it, then take a look at our recommendations for some hot new undies.  I am sure these would get Christian Grey’s seal of approval!

Stella McCartney has designed an everyday, more affordable range called Stella, which is currently on sale at David Jones. They’re very pretty, with gorgeous detail and beautiful finishes. The range uses advanced shapewear technology combined with  ‘eco-conscious’ fabrics and recycled metal. Our recommendation is that Stella is better suited to those with more petite figures.

Sass and Bide, have a very cool range on sale at Myer.  Sexy lace and really funky bold, geometric prints. Sizes from B to D cup.

Dita Von Teese’s Von Follies range can be found at Target;   Sexy designs, reasonable prices and a huge range. With sizes going up to 20E, ticks all the boxes!

If you’re looking for something a little more risqué then we give these two web sites the thumbs up…enjoy:

Remember the department stores and lingerie shops should do a fitting for free – take full advantage as around 75% of girls are wearing the wrong size bra. So why not put the book down for a couple of hours and treat yourself to something that’ll make you feel super sexy!!
