Swimwear Shopping Advice by Ruby Slippers Styling

The hell that is swimwear shopping!!

frontIt wins third in things I hate doing…pipped to the post by bikini wax and root canal!

The lights are always unflattering, you seem to swell to twice your normal size, and you could have sworn your cellulite has doubled since last time you checked. Sounding familiar? Well girls you’re not alone…I am yet to find anyone who skips into the changing room with an arm full of bikini’s and walks out feeling just as happy. Well maybe Gisele?

So follow our top styling tips to ease some of the shopping pain, and find the perfect swimsuit to match your shape:

Big Boobs:

Halternecks and wide straps are your friend, stringy straps are the enemy! You need to feel like you are wearing a bra, if not it’s not supportive enough.

big

Seafolly, $184.90  ASOS, $73

Big hips:

Draw attention upwards with details, prints, and colours:

bb

Capriosca,$143  Tigerlily, $219.95

Small boobs:

Create some shape with dramaic lines, detailed fabric and clashing prints:

3g

Target, $59  ASOS, $60  Surfstitch, $89.99

Tummy Trouble:

Don’t go for the all black swim suit to cover up your tum. That big expanse of black, will only make you look wider. Try one of these gorgeous numbers, that will give you all the stylish camoflague you need and create some beautiful shape:

Jets, $169  Isola by Megan Gale at Sunburn, $219.95

Then add some essentials, a load of sunscreen and you are good to go:

Top 5 tips for dressing LOUDLY with style… and for a great cause!

Ladies, if there’s one thing we love at Ruby Slippers it’s getting dressed up are you with us? And, when we can do it to benefit a good cause well that’s even better!

Friday 16th October is #LOUDSHIRTDAY 2015, the annual fundraising initiative encouraging Australians everywhere to don their brightest clothing to support deaf and hearing impaired children around the country (via The Shepherd Centre in NSW/ACT).

Many people don’t realise that it costs $18,000 per child, per year to provide these crucial early intervention services teaching kids how to hear and speak and give them the best shot at life despite their disability. So to help raise much needed funds and to break out of your monochrome ways, lets embrace the new season styles and show our support!!

To encourage all our wonderful gals to join us, we’ve put together our top five stylist tips for dressing LOUDLY and still looking fabulous!

  1. Loud doesn’t necessarily mean bright colours. For the more traditional fashionista, try clashing black and white prints for LOUD style that doesn’t slap you in the face. The sky’s the limit, we love leopard print and stripes, checks paired with abstract prints. The trick is to pick tailored pieces and keep patterns proportional to your body shape.

2. For our more adventurous ladies, try mixing prints (florals are an obvious winner for spring) that have the same colour scheme, like this Missoni top and skirt straight off the runway. The splashes of yellow in the purple skirt and purple in the yellow top mean the whole outfit hangs together and looks stunning instead of silly.

b

And check out these looks for all out loud, floral lust:

3. Two is better than one. Twin sets are all the rage. A crop and pencil skirt in a unique print looks chic and polished for the races:

f

Forever Unique

This Alice McCall set is funky, fresh and looks great both together and as separates. We’re in love!

g

4. It’s all about COLOUR, COLOUR, COLOUR! Look for a standout colour (think red, magenta, emerald green or navy) and rock it on top AND bottom. At Ruby Slippers we love LOVE a tailored pant and blazer combo like these:

er

Keep it simple with a strappy nude shoe and dewy makeup to finish off the look.

5.  Let your shoes do the talking. We all know the importance of a good shoe, sometimes we even plan our whole outfits around the perfect pair. This is a great excuse to rock the most marvelous, sparkly, strappy, colourful and outlandish pair you can find. Because, well, why not!! Sophia Webster makes some of the most magical creations (available via Green With Envy Boutique and online), but if your budget doesn’t stretch that far, we’ve found some lust-worthy, affordable pairs:

u

FarfetchThe Real Real, Office

Show us how you get LOUD by posting your style photo on social media using the hashtag #LoudShirtDay and support the cause by registering to host your own event anytime from now until October 16.

You’ll be turning heads for all the right reasons in no time. So go forth in style ladies!

Have fun x

Do you need saving from the Mummy Funk?

Funk (noun)

1) A foul odour.

2) A style of R&B music whose artists include James Brown, Parliament-Funkadelic (aka P-Funk) and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

3) Depressed mood.

Let’s be real, it’s not one (I hope!) and sadly, it’s not two.

It’s:

4) Mummy Funk. Post baby styling hell.

At Ruby Slippers Styling, many of us are Mum’s so we know what it’s like. That first year…So many things are changing. So. Many. Things

Nothing is the same boobs, tummy, back, skin, hair, food intake and time. Time to actually ‘get ready’ in the morning having been awake since 5am and every 2 hours prior to that. Those work and going out clothes hanging abandoned in the wardrobe…and you are left wondering if your style left with the ability to have a solid 8 hours sleep.

Did we really consider our Saturday night outfit for the entire week before going out?

So, if you have found yourself completely reconsidering how you are dressing or the point of dressing at all…..The below list is an easy guide to avoiding Mummy Funk, it saved us and we hope it can help you too!

From the Top

Easy access and basic is the key.  Oversize t-shirts with a cap sleeve or ¾ sleeve an absolute must!  I kept my ASOS maternity tee’s, a savior.

asos top

ASOS, $36

decuba

Decjuba, $59.95

If you are breast feeding, buy 3 or 4 Bonds tanks with in-built bra and pop them under absolutely everything. Layer simply to hide bumps and lumps!

bonds

Bonds, $41.95

In the early, leaky day, avoid jersey material, it is not your friend…opt for dark, patterned, synthetic fabrics…they will hide any milky stains.

top

Decjuba, $41.95

To layer over the top, look for long line cardigans and jackets with a 2-way zip for winter and gorgeous  kimon capes for summer to add colour.

misterzimi

Mister Zimi, $140

Witchery

Witchery, $99.95`

9088046-196-1-mn

Seed, $198.95

For your bottom….It not a crime to stay in maternity jeans for a few months after bub comes along, just watch then they start to sag. A big winner is patterned leggings and soft harem style pants. These looked stylish and keep you out of tracksuit pants and gym clothes…limit that habit to the gym or exercising to get out of the ‘funk’.

jeanswest

Jeanswest, $69.99 (or 2 for $99 – bargain!)

soft pants sportsgirl

Sportsgirl, $99.95

decjuba1

Decjuba, $59.95

On your toes…

Welcome to the world of flats!! And, this doesn’t mean boring btw!  Plimsoles, look great with everything and are so comfortable. We love Toms, with Superga coming a close second!

1

Superga, $100  Shoes of Prey $234  Toms, $59 Witchery, $99.95

If you can keep these looks on rotation, you will most certainly be feeling more funky than funk in no time! Remember that you are now more feminine than ever and it can actually be a wonderful time to try something new. Comfort and practicality can really work as you get into your new groove.

Don’t forget, we offer Yummy Mummy styling packages in both SYDNEY and MELBOURNE, if you need a little help finding your look!
